Recycling Labels and Environmental Claims on Packaging
Recycling labels and environmental claims need to describe the packaging accurately. A box, coating, window, closure and inner wrap may not all have the same end-of-life route, so avoid broad claims until the complete specification and the relevant guidance have been checked.

Make clear which part a claim describes
A statement such as “recyclable” should not leave the reader guessing whether it applies to the product, the whole pack or one packaging component. Describe the relevant item and give clear disposal instructions where appropriate. Broad wording such as “eco-friendly” can hide important limits and should not replace evidence about the actual packaging.
- Name the packaging component covered by the claim.
- Check that images, icons and surrounding copy do not imply more than the evidence supports.
- Keep the evidence and approved wording together with the packaging artwork.
Review the full pack, not just the outer board
A packaging system can include printed board, coatings, laminates, windows, tapes, labels, inserts and protective wraps. These parts can affect sorting, collection and recycling routes. Confirm the construction and disposal guidance for the finished item rather than assuming that a paperboard outer makes every component recyclable in the same way.
Use current guidance and check again before print
The Competition and Markets Authority's Green Claims Code explains how environmental claims should be clear and supported. OPRL describes its own label scheme and assessment approach. These references do not replace a project-specific assessment, and packaging rules can change; review the current official guidance before approving any printed environmental claim.
