Packaging Inserts and Dividers for Fragile Products

An insert or divider can separate products, control movement and make a multi-item pack easier to present. The right layout starts with the items as they will be packed, then is checked inside the finished outer box.

Use the product, route to customer and quantity to choose the right packaging specification.

Map the product positions first

Draw or photograph the intended layout before deciding on an insert. Measure each item with caps, lids and labels fitted, and mark which surfaces should not touch. A bottle set, a candle with a lid and a kit of mixed products need different support even when they use the same outer box.

  • Count the items and note their dimensions, weight and orientation.
  • Mark fragile surfaces, closures and parts that must stay visible.
  • Decide whether the pack is for shipping, retail display, gifting or more than one use.

Choose the insert around the job

A folded paperboard tray, corrugated divider or shaped support may suit a different product and packing process. Dividers can keep separate items apart; a cradle can support an individual shape; a presentation insert can make the layout clear when the box opens. The appropriate material and construction must be confirmed for the specific project.

Check the complete pack before ordering

An insert that fits by itself may still leave too much movement in the outer box or make the pack difficult to assemble. Ask for the finished internal dimensions and test the packed layout, closure and removal. For a fragile or higher-value item, agree a representative sample or test plan before a production run.

  • Include the outer box style and internal dimensions in the brief.
  • Ask how the insert is loaded and whether packers need an assembly sequence.
  • Photograph the approved pack-out so the next run can match it.
