Matte vs Gloss Coating

Matte and gloss change the way printed packaging looks and feels. The best choice depends on the brand, the product and how the pack will be handled.

Matte vs Gloss Coating packaging example
Use the product, route to customer and quantity to choose the right packaging specification.

Matte

Matte reduces surface reflection and gives a quieter, softer presentation. It can be a good fit for minimal, premium or natural-looking packaging, but small type and dark surfaces should be checked on the proof.

Gloss

Gloss increases surface reflection and can make colours feel more vivid. It is useful when the product needs a brighter retail presence, but reflections can affect readability under strong lights.

Choose after the artwork is clear

Ask for the finish to be reviewed alongside board colour and print coverage. A sample is the most reliable way to judge the tactile result.
