How to Choose Corrugated Box Strength for Shipping

The right corrugated box depends on the packed product, its weight, the journey and how the parcel will be stored or handled. There is no single board grade that suits every shipment, so share the real packing conditions before choosing a specification.

Use the product, route to customer and quantity to choose the right packaging specification.

Start with the complete packed order

A box is selected for the parcel it must contain, not just the bare product. Record the outer dimensions and packed weight, then include any inner tray, divider, wrap or void fill. Note whether the contents are one solid item, several pieces that can move, or a fragile item with a concentrated load.

  • Measure the packed order in the orientation it will be shipped.
  • List the heaviest item and any parts that can shift or press against a panel.
  • Say whether the box will be stacked, stored for a period or sent through parcel networks.

Match the structure to handling and storage

Board construction, box style, dimensions and closure all affect how a parcel performs. A tight fit can reduce movement, but it must still leave the room required for protection and assembly. A large empty space can let products shift; an oversized box can also use more material and take up more storage space.

Ask for a specification you can test

When requesting a quote, ask which board construction and box style are proposed for your packed weight and route. If the contents are valuable or breakable, pack a representative order and assess fit, closure and movement before approving the full run. For demanding or stacked shipments, ask what performance evidence or testing is appropriate rather than selecting a grade from a generic chart.

  • Share your destination and normal parcel-handling conditions.
  • Confirm whether the quoted strength applies to the finished box and its intended use.
  • Keep the approved sample and box specification for repeat orders.
