Recycled vs FSC Cardboard: What to Check
Recycled-content and FSC sourcing claims describe different parts of a cardboard specification. They should not be treated as interchangeable labels or as proof that every finished box can be recycled. The correct wording depends on the board grade, the chain of custody, the percentage or certification being claimed, and any print, coating, insert or other component in the pack. Ask for evidence that applies to the exact product and version you plan to order.
Understand what each claim refers to
A recycled-content claim concerns the fibre used in a material and should identify the percentage, the component covered and how that percentage is documented. Ask whether it applies to the board only or to the complete pack. Do not infer a recycled percentage from a brown or kraft appearance; colour and material origin are not the same thing.
An FSC claim relates to sourcing and chain-of-custody requirements for forest-based material. Ask for the relevant certificate details and confirmation that the proposed product and printed claim are covered. Certification can be specific to a material, business, product or label use, so an unrelated certificate is not evidence for your particular packaging.
Check the full box, not just the board
List the complete pack-out, including windows, labels, adhesives, laminations, coatings and inserts. These components may affect recyclability or which environmental statement is accurate. Recycled content, certified sourcing and end-of-life recyclability are separate questions; a supplier should confirm each claim against the actual specification.
Keep supporting documents with the approved artwork and order record. Check that the wording on the product page and packaging matches the documentation and covers every variant you plan to sell. If one size or finish uses a different board or coating, verify that the evidence still applies before repeating the same claim across the range.
Request evidence before approving a claim
Include your preferred material, quantity, dimensions and environmental wording in the quote request. The published minimum order is 100 boxes per size and design. Ask which board specifications can be quoted and what current documentation is available for each claim; this page does not certify a material or promise a specific recycled percentage.
Confirm the production and delivery schedule for the specified board, print, finish and destination before releasing artwork. Record the approved wording in writing. If a certification label will appear on the box, confirm that its use has been authorised for the exact product before the artwork is released.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are recycled-content and FSC claims the same?
No. They refer to different aspects of a material specification. Confirm each claim and its supporting evidence separately.
Does FSC sourcing mean a finished box is recyclable?
Not by itself. Recyclability depends on the complete pack, including coatings, print, windows, labels and inserts.
What should I verify before using a certification label?
Confirm the current certificate, chain-of-custody coverage and permission to use the label for the exact product and artwork.
