How to Measure a Product for Packaging

Practical guide

Accurate measurements make the quote and dieline more useful. Measure the product as it will sit inside the box and include anything that changes its packed size.

Use the product, route to customer and quantity to choose the right packaging specification.

Measure length, width and height

Record the product or packed arrangement in a consistent order: length × width × height. Tell us whether the dimensions are internal product dimensions, packed dimensions or an existing box size.

  • Measure with lids, caps or closures fitted.
  • Include tissue, trays, inserts or protective material.
  • Note the unit: millimetres, centimetres or inches.

Add practical clearance

A box should not force the product into place, but too much empty space can increase movement and shipping volume. Tell us what needs protecting and how the item will be packed.

Send what you know

Approximate measurements are still useful for a first conversation. Add a photo or reference image and the team can help identify the details that need confirming.
